Searching the DU Directory

The DU Directory Search Program searches a combination of the DU E-mail Directory and the DU Faculty/Staff Telephone Directory.

Only results that match all entered names are displayed.

When a search generates more than 20 results, only the first 20 results are displayed. Additional results can be displayed by clicking on links in a line below the displayed results.

Examples of searches are given below. For purposes of these examples, the combined directory is assumed to contain only entries for the following people:

Franklin, John
Franklin-Smith, Alfred
Kramer, Alice Franklin
Smith, Franklin H.
Smyth, Frank

Several kinds of searches are possible:

Spelling Search

If you know how to spell someone's name, the simplest way to search the directory is to type a name or series of names into the box on the web page and click the Submit button. Only entries that exactly match all of the names you enter will be displayed.

For example, if the following options are selected:

  • Match names spelled like this.
  • Match either first or last names.
  • Search all listings.
Entering Franklin will match:

 Franklin, John
Franklin-Smith, Alfred
Kramer, Alice Franklin and
Smith, Franklin H.
Entering Frank will match:

 Smyth, Frank
Entering Smith will match:

 Franklin-Smith, Alfred and
Smith, Franklin H
Entering Alice Franklin will match:

 Kramer, Alice Franklin

Phonetic Search

If you are not sure about how to spell someone's name, you may want to try selecting the "Match names pronounced like this" option. Only entries that phonetically match all of the names you enter will be displayed.

For example, if the following options are selected:

  • Match names pronounced like this.
  • Match either first or last names.
  • Search all listings.
Entering Smith will match:

 Franklin-Smith, Alfred
Smith, Franklin H. and
Smyth, Frank
Entering Franklin Smith will match:

 Franklin-Smith, Alfred and
Smith, Franklin H.

Matching Last Names Only

Either spelling searches or phonetic searches can be restricted to match only last names.

For example, if the following options are selected:

  • Match names spelled like this.
  • Match last names only.
  • Search all listings.
Entering Franklin will match:

 Franklin, John and
Franklin-Smith, Alfred
Entering Franklin Smith will match:

 Franklin-Smith, Alfred

Matching First Names Only

Either spelling searches or phonetic searches can be restricted to match only first names.

For example, if the following options are selected:

  • Match names spelled like this.
  • Match first names only.
  • Search all listings.
Entering Franklin will match:

 Kramer, Alice Franklin and
Smith, Franklin H.
Entering Franklin Smith will match:

 nothing (see Note 1)

Note 1: Nothing is matched in the search for Franklin Smith because no one has first names of both Franklin and Smith.

Matching the Faculty/Staff Telephone Directory

The faculty/staff telephone directory lists people who have on-campus offices. In addition to other information, these entries usually list title, department, office location, and telephone number. Because most full-time employees are listed in the faculty/staff directory and most students are not, you may be able to use this information to narrow your search for someone with a common name.

You should bear in mind that there are many exceptions to the general rule that faculty and staff are listed in the faculty/staff directory and students are not. Here are a few:

  • Many employees take classes at the University. Only the faculty/staff telephone directory listing is included for these students.

  • Some employees of organizations affiliated with the University have on-campus offices. These people, who may be neither employees nor students, are listed in the faculty/staff telephone directory.

  • Many retired employees who no longer have on-campus offices continue to maintain @du.edu e-mail accounts. These people, who in many ways are more like employees than they are like students, are not listed in the faculty/staff telephone directory.

  • Generally, adjunct professors and part-time employees are not listed in the faculty/staff telephone directory.

However, if you are sure that the person you are looking for has (or does not have) an on-campus office, you may want to narrow your search by including only people in (or not in) the faculty/staff telephone directory.
